Arudra Darshan 2026 at Chidambaram

Arudra Darshan (Arudra Darisanam) is the biggest night of the year at the Chidambaram Nataraja Temple. In 2026 it falls on Thursday, 24 December 2026, in the Tamil month of Margazhi.

When is Arudra Darshan 2026?

Arudra Darshan is celebrated on the day of the Thiruvathirai (Ardra) nakshatram in Margazhi. Panchangams list the 2026 festival on Thursday, 24 December 2026, with Thiruvathirai nakshatram from about 4:52 am on 24 December to about 1:46 am on 25 December.

At Chidambaram it is the climax of the ten-day Margazhi Thiruvathirai festival. The temple car festival (therottam) is usually held the day before, when Nataraja and Sivakami are taken around the car streets. Exact puja and procession times are announced by the temple, so check closer to the date.

What happens on the day

Arudra Darshan celebrates Shiva’s cosmic dance, the Ananda Tandavam. In the early hours there is an elaborate abhishekam for Nataraja, and later in the day the deities come out in procession for the ‘darshan’ that gives the festival its name: devotees see Nataraja dance out of the hall amid music and chanting.

In Tamil homes, Thiruvathirai is also marked with a special sweet, Thiruvathirai kali, served with a mixed-vegetable kootu.

Tips for visiting during the festival

  • Book your stay early. Rooms in and around Chidambaram fill up for the car festival and Arudra Darshan, and late bookings cost more.
  • Arrive a day before. Roads around the four car streets get crowded; reaching the night before lets you see the car festival and be rested for the darshan.
  • Carry little, wear comfortable traditional clothes, and keep water with you — you may stand for long stretches.
  • Keep children and elders close in the procession crowds, and agree on a meeting point.
  • Park outside the core area and walk in, or use an auto for the last stretch.
