Gangaikonda Cholapuram

Rajendra Chola I built the Brihadisvara Temple at Gangaikonda Cholapuram as the centrepiece of his new capital, completing it in 1035 CE. Today it is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site ‘Great Living Chola Temples’, along with the big temples of Thanjavur and Darasuram.

What to see

The temple’s vimana rises to about 55 m, a little shorter than its famous predecessor at Thanjavur, with gracefully curving sides. Look for the large Nandi facing the sanctum, the finely carved sculptures on the outer walls, and the lion-headed well in the courtyard.

The temple is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India and is still a living place of worship. The wide lawns around it are lovely in the late afternoon light.

Visiting

The temple is generally open from about 6 am to 12 noon and 4 pm to 8 pm, with free entry. Allow at least an hour to walk around the vimana and the courtyard.

Getting there from Bharathi Homestay

Gangaikonda Cholapuram is about 42.5 km from the homestay via Chidambaram Main Road and NH36 (a toll road); the NH81 route is about 46 km with no toll. It makes a good half-day trip, or a full day if you continue to Kumbakonam and Darasuram.
