Vaitheeswaran Koil

At Vaitheeswaran Koil, Shiva is worshipped as Vaidyanathar — ‘the lord of healing’ — with Goddess Thaiyal Nayaki. It is one of the nine Navagraha temples of Tamil Nadu, the shrine for Angaraka (Sevvai, Mars).

Why devotees visit

Many come seeking relief from illness, as the temple is associated with healing. Thaiyal Nayaki is depicted holding a vessel of medicinal oil, and the Siddhamirtham tank inside the complex is considered sacred.

As the Angaraka (Mars) sthalam, it is also visited for Sevvai dosha parihara. The town is well known for Nadi astrology (palm-leaf readings); if you consult a reader, agree on the fee beforehand.

Visiting

The temple is generally open from about 6 am to 11 am and 4 pm to 8:30 pm. Tuesdays (Sevvai) are especially busy. Timings change on festival days, so please confirm locally.

Getting there from Bharathi Homestay

Vaitheeswaran Koil is about 33.6 km from the homestay by road, on the way towards Sirkazhi and Mayiladuthurai. It pairs well with a morning at the Nataraja Temple and, for a longer day, a drive on to the Navagraha temples around Kumbakonam (about 74 km from us).
