Pichavaram Mangrove Forest

Pichavaram is one of India’s best-known mangrove forests: a maze of narrow, tree-lined water channels and open lagoons between the Vellar and Coleroon estuaries, a short drive from Chidambaram.

What you’ll see

Boats wind through green tunnels of mangrove, with roots rising out of the water on both sides. Between November and February the area also draws migratory and resident water birds, which makes early boat rides especially rewarding.

Rowing boat or motor boat?

Boats are run from the boat house, and fares are charged per boat by type and duration. Rowing boats can enter the narrow green canals, which is the experience most people come for. Motor boats are faster but stay mostly in the wider lagoons.

Fares and timings change from season to season and published figures vary, so confirm the boat type, route, duration and fare at the counter before boarding. Life jackets are provided.

Tips

  • Go on a weekday morning if you can. On Sundays and holidays the wait for boats can be long.
  • Carry water, a cap, sunscreen and mosquito repellent. Food options near the jetty are limited.
  • March to June is very hot on the water; the cooler months from November to February are the most comfortable.
  • Combine it with an evening at the Nataraja Temple: Pichavaram is about 15 km from Chidambaram town.

Getting there from Bharathi Homestay

Pichavaram is about 18.6 km from the homestay by road. Many guests do a morning boat ride, return for lunch in their own kitchen, and visit the Nataraja Temple in the evening.
